A Look Back in Time

Each collector reminisced about the very first piece that set them down their individual horological journeys.

There were similarities in their nostalgia, with Stephanie and Dominic both describing how their fascination for watches began when they were children – with personal and emotional connection being a common theme in their very first pieces. Whilst a Mickey Mouse watch and a Baby-G aren’t exactly watches that would turn heads, to Stephanie and Dominic alike, they provided moments of clarity and built their intrigue and desire for more.

Moving on to mechanical pieces as they matured, both collectors officially took their first steps into the cultured world of time-tellers with their first purchase - a Rolex. Not to be left behind, Tom, was first turned on to watches with the realisation that they could operate without a battery. He was captivated by how mechanical pieces could still work no matter where they are in the world, transcending both space and time – an especially insightful take on what most would see as simply a timekeeping tool. The rich history behind meticulously crafted watches furthered his desire to learn more about the rarity and complexity that accompany them.

At the heart of each collection is a common love for time-telling and timekeeping; an essence that shines through as they spoke at length about a growing appreciation for independent brands, and exclusive watches produced in small batches. Stephanie defined a collection as one that considers other factors beyond popularity and price. To her, watches should be more than a flex. A collection should be thoughtful, as she explained to the audience how she curates her collection with her family, particularly with her children in mind. Similarly, Dominic and Tom believe that passion should be at the heart of any true collector. To them, watches should never be defined by the opinion of others, especially with social media at times influencing how one should feel about specific brands or models.

The three panelists believe that a collection should tell the story of the owner, and one that evokes emotions and has sentimental value. They adopt a similar attitude towards watch collecting which is of a balance between style, personality and the emotions it elicits. As such, both Dominic and Tom are strong advocates of lesser-known independent makers that produce with quality craftsmanship. Despite not having a lucrative sell-on price pegged to such watches, both share the same view that craftsmanship, uniquity, and storytelling should be at the fore when choosing a timepiece to add to his collection.

Timeless Legacy

As true connoisseurs, it comes as no surprise that the three collectors have their eye on timeless pieces - watches that pass the rigour of time through quality materials, expert craftsmanship, and showmanship. Imparting their wisdom, they touched on not just their personal objectives, but hopes for the wider community as well.

Keeping an open mind to the world of collaboration, they unanimously agree that such collaboration between brands should be more than just a marketing effort. Instead, brands should be able to bring their design expertise and DNA to co-create innovative products that encompass artistic value and craftsmanship, opening doors to new opportunities.

As the night came to a close, it felt like time truly had come to a standstill, with avid collectors from veterans to beginners alike, connecting in the moment through individual stories and shared knowledge of a growing community.
